Goal.com's MLS Best XI: Week 26

Cowboys jersey
Bouna Condoul, New York Red Bulls: Although New York had the better of the weekend's marquee matchup, the Red Bulls still needed Bouna Coundoul on a few occasions. He was confident coming off his line and made a great stop on a trademark David Beckham free kick to preserve a clean sheet for his team.
Defenders
Sheanon Williams, Philadelphia Union: Since Sheanon Williams joined the Union roster at the end of football jerseys
August, the Union has gone 2-1-1 in MLS play, conceding only two goals. While Brad Knighton surely deserves credit since entering the lineup, Williams has been a revelation at right back, shoring up the Union defense and using his athleticism to pop up all over the field, a trend he continued with a fine performance against Chivas USA.
Carlos Mendes, New York Red Bulls: Often overshadowed by rookie sensation Tim Ream, Carlos Mendes has nonetheless held down a starting spot with some fine performances in 2010. His ability was once again on display against Los Angeles as he was largely responsible for shutting down Edson Buddle and, along with Bouna Coundoul, was a major factor in his team's clean sheet.
Nat Borchers, Real Salt Lake: One of the few regular starters fielded by Jason Kreis on Saturday against Colorado, Borchers never looked fatigued, putting in an exemplary 90 minutes at the back before rushing forward to bag an injury-time equalizer for Salt Lake.
Kosuke Kimura, Colorado Rapids: A fixture in the Rapids lineup all season long, Kimura has been one of the best full backs in MLS through the second half of the season and showed why with another fine display against Real Salt Lake. He exploited the weakness of RSL's flanks to assist Conor Casey's opener and was lively all Colts jersey
game long.
Midfielders
David Ferreira, FC Dallas: Ferreira was once again at his best in FC Dallas' two games this week. Against New England, he made up for a first half penalty miss by putting away his second penalty before setting up Jeff Cunningham's late equalizer. He then went on to pull the strings all game long versus Kansas City and came away with two more assists.
Pablo Mastroeni, Colorado Rapids: Real Salt Lake may have topped Colorado in the midfield battle for most of Saturday's game, but not through any lack of effort from Pablo Mastroeni. He put on a display that any defensive midfielder should study, breaking up many Salt Lake attacks and doing his best to elevate the level of play of those around him.
Shalrie Joseph, New England Revolution: The MLS veteran was dominant at the heart of New England's midfield in both games the Revolution played this week, scoring a goal in each game and giving it his all for 180 minutes. Although he conceded a late penalty against Columbus, it was not enough to detract from an otherwise stellar week.
Joel Lindpere, New York Red Bulls: Joel Lindpere was for the Red Bulls what every Galaxy fan hoped Landon Donovan could have been on Friday night. He moved the ball up and down the left flank with ease, provided and excellent outlet for Rafa Marquez's passing, and created a number of threats of his own.
Forwards
Chris Wondolowski, San Jose Earthquakes: A presence for San Jose all season long, Wondolowski has exploded into the MVP race in the last few weeks. Against Toronto, he grabbed himself a hat-trick, including his league-leading seventh game winning goal of the season. His movement and trickery have made him a Cowboys jersey
breakout player this season and will continue to trouble MLS defenses in the remainder of the season and well into the playoffs.
Geovanni, San Jose Earthquakes: Behind Wondolowski's hat-trick performance was the immeasurable Geovanni. He was at the heart of nearly every attacking move put together by San Jose and is quickly coming to form an understanding with the players around him that San Jose fans hope will lead to a higher offensive output from a usually goal-starved team.

Batch leads Steelers past Buccaneers 38-13

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Charlie Batch(notes) doesn’t pretend to be a savior.
His job is to help Pittsburgh continue winning while Ben Roethlisberger(notes) is on suspension, and the 35-year-old quarterback just wants to do his part.
“These opportunities don’t come often right now,” the 13-year veteran said Sunday after making his first start in nearly three years and helping the Steelers remain unbeaten with a 38-13 rout of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“Everybody knows Ben’s the starter,” Batch added. “One thing I didn’t want to do was be that weak link, to go out nfl jerseys
there and not be able to provide a spark or put this team in the end zone.”
Batch threw for 186 yards and two long touchdowns to Mike Wallace(notes), Rashard Mendenhall(notes) rushed for 143 yards and one score, and Pittsburgh’s defense delivered another strong performance with Brett Keisel(notes) returning an interception 79 yards for a fourth-quarter TD.
The Steelers improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2007, despite playing without Roethlisberger, who’s serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
Dennis Dixon(notes) started the previous two games, but was lost to a knee injury last week. That opened the door for Batch.
“This is where we expected to be at this point,” Batch said. “I know a lot of Steelers jersey
people on the outside did not believe that. But for us, we’re just taking it one game at a time.”
Wallace scored on catches of 46 and 41 yards during a stretch where Pittsburgh, which did little offensively the first two weeks of the season, scored on four straight possessions to build a 28-6 halftime lead.
Tampa Bay’s Aqib Talib(notes) intercepted Batch’s first pass of the day to set up a 40-yard field goal, but Bucs fans—seemingly lost in the sea of gold-clad Steeler supporters who gave Raymond James Stadium the look and feel of Heinz Field—had little to cheer about the rest of the way.
Josh Freeman(notes) led one long drive for Tampa Bay (2-1), however the nearly nine-minute drive only produced a second-quarter field goal. The Buccaneers finished with 303 yards total offense, but couldn’t get into the end zone until backup quarterback got them there in the closing minutes.
“Field goals don’t win games in this league,” Freeman said.
“We played a heavyweight,” Bucs coach Raheem Morris added. “They were more physical, more aggressive and more opportunistic.”
Batch victimized rookie Cody Grimm(notes), starting in place of suspended safety Tanard Jackson(notes), on his first TD pass to Wallace. Wallace, who had three catches for 100 yards, hauled in a pass that Talib tipped in the right corner of the end zone for his second score.
The Steelers’ rejuvenated running game did its part, too, with Mendenhall averaging 7.5 yards per carry and doing most of his damage in the second half. The defense sacked Freeman three times and added two more turnovers to the NFL-leading eight it took into the game.
Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said the Steelers expect to find a way to be successful.
“The standard is winning,” Tomlin said. “The 11 of the field represent us. They’re capable, and they embrace it.”
Freeman completed 20 of 31 passes for 184 yards and one interception before being removed with the Steelers up by 32 points in the fourth quarter. Backup Josh Johnson(notes) led a late scoring drive, with rookie LeGarrette Blount(notes) covering the final yard on fourth-and-goal.Colts jersey

It was only the second touchdown the Pittsburgh defense has allowed this season.
“That was a good team, and I think we learned a lot from it,” Freeman said. “They dominated us on the scoreboard, but at the same time I feel like our team’s mentality walking away is that we could’ve played with those guys.”
Pittsburgh threw a league-low 43 passes in its first two games, beating Atlanta and Tennessee primarily by running the ball and playing ballhawking defense. The Steelers forced seven turnovers against the Titans and limited Chris Johnson to 34 yards rushing on 16 attempts, ending his streak of 12 consecutive 100-yard games.
Batch mixed the pass with the run to keep the Bucs on their heels, even reverting to the early days on his 13-year career when he scrambled up the middle for 24 yards on third-and-6 to prolong a 67-yard drive that Mendenhall capped with his 3-yard TD run for a 14-6 lead.
Batch completed 11 of his first 14 passes, with two of Vikings jersey
the incompletions coming on a drop and a spike to stop the clock before throwing a 9-yard TD pass to Hines Ward(notes) just before halftime. The Steelers, who had 201 yards rushing, only threw three times in the second half.
“He played like a veteran. … He didn’t blink,” Tomlin said. “He’s been a consummate professional and team player, and good things usually happen for those kind of people.”
Notes: The Steelers visited Raymond James Stadium for the first time since winning the Super Bowl there two seasons ago. … Ward has caught a pass in 181 consecutive games. … Blount led Tampa Bay with 27 yards rushing on 6 attempts.

26 sep 10 Opening Up

IRVING, Texas - Jay Ratliff is a big man - 6-4, 303 pounds and strong. Even more heavy over the last week has been his heart.
Ratliff practiced last Friday and played against Chicago on cheap nfl jerseys
Sunday after learning of the death of both his grandmother and grandfather, Aretha and Willie Ratliff, who were caught in a tragic house, fire in Hahira, Ga. on Sept. 16. He watched film of the Week 2 loss with his teammates on Monday, but missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday to attend their funeral.
Ratliff returned to Valley Ranch for practice on Friday, and spoke afterward about his experience dealing with the heartbreak.
What's been the toughest part of all of this?
Ratliff: I lost my grandfather, a man who helped raise me, helped me become the man I became. It was real hard, but I went down there hurting really bad and came back feeling proud and motivated, for two reasons. With everything that happened before, with my grandfather's funeral and all the support I got from my team, and then what Jerry (Jones) did for me and my family that meant a lot. I don't know if he really realized how much that meant to my family. Of course, if you do something like that for my family, they're never going to forget you. And D-Ware and a lot of people on the staff sending flowers, they just made friends for life. I'm never going to forget them.
Jerry let you borrow his jet?
Ratliff: Yeah, he gave me his plane, sent flowers, things like that. He could be anywhere in the world, doing anything, and for him to take time out of his day to think about one of his players and to help him out the best way he can, that was really thoughtful of him, and it's greatly appreciated.
How tough was it for you to play last week?
Ratliff: It was tough. But I know that's what my grandfather would've wanted, me to be here, be around the team so I won't be by myself thinking a lot. That was the best thing for me to do, and I'm glad I did it.
Wade Phillips also said he thought it was good for you to be 49ers jersey
around your teammates?
Ratliff: Yeah, I told him that. I also talked to my dad about coming down, and he said the same thing, "Just stay there, work with your teammates and trust me, you'll be glad that you did." And he was right, again.
Football teams are called families a lot of times. Was this an example of how close your defensive line group and the rest of the team are?
Ratliff: That's why I say I feel so motivated to be back here. Guys that I don't really talk to as much - nothing between us - but even those guys stepped up and called me, sent me a text message, and told me their prayers were with me, things like that. It's something simple, something very simple, but it just went a long way with me. Steelers jersey

Your grandmother passes away because she wouldn't leave your grandfather's side in the fire. What does that say about love?
Ratliff: That's one thing about my family - we love hard. We love real hard. And that's what I'm trying to bring to this team. I love each and every one of those guys on this team, and I'm going to play my heart out for them. If there's anything they need from me, they've got it. No doubt about it.
Do you feel like your grandfather's spirit is still with you?
Ratliff: I feel like it. His blood is rushing through my veins. I'm very proud of Saints jersey
that. He's a World War II vet. One thing is he never, ever complained about anything. He was a double amputee, he lost his sight, and so many things went wrong with him. And I can honestly say I never, ever heard him complain. His attitude, his high-energy spirit, none of that changed. He was a strong, strong guy, physically. But mentally and spiritually he was just as strong. He had it made up in his mind he was going to live his life to the fullest every single day. And I feel like since I've been back here, that's what I'm going to do for the rest of my life, just live my life to the fullest, no matter what. Just try to find the best in myself and only show that.

FOCUS ON FISH - OUT FOR REVENGE, JETS TURN ATTENTION TO ON-FIELD TASK

Now that much of the noise from the Baryon Edwards arrest has subsided, the drama-queen Jets can turn their attention away from off-the-field calamity and toward their pivotal showdown for first place in the AFC East against the Dolphins on Sunday night at Sun Life Stadium.
This is, after all, what we're all here for, isn't it?
One day after Rex Ryan spent nearly his entire 20-minutes press conference answering questions about Edwards with not a single question asked about Sunday's game - other than injuries - some semblance of normalcy returned to the building yesterday: Football was the topic of football jersey
most conversations.
The focus for the 1-1 Jets is beating the 2-0 Dolphins, not reacting to the mess Edwards got himself into.
Right guard Brandon Moore was relieved that, "for the first time in like two weeks nothing was brought up," yesterday by Ryan or the team's media-relations department, "that could be some sort of distraction.
"Guys in the locker room have the ability to block that stuff out," Moore said. "When Sunday comes there are no excuses. That's not even a concern of mine. The concern I have is that guys have learned lessons and none of this will happen again."
What the Jets are hoping will not happen again is another loss to Miami. They have lost three straight to the Dolphins.
"It's personal," Jets injured linebacker Calvin Pace said of the Miami sweep in 2009.
"There's still a wound there," Jets tackle Wayne Hunter said. "We made it all the way to the AFC Championship game and we still had a feeling of being unsatisfied because we didn't beat Miami even once. Even if we had gotten to the Super Bowl it still would have bothered me that we didn't beat Bills jersey
Miami."
The first three games on the Jets' schedule have been staring them in the face for months. Baltimore is a legitimate Super Bowl contender. New England has owned the AFC East seemingly since the Nixon administration.Indianapolis Colts jersey

And the Dolphins have owed the Jets in the last three meetings.
A lot of players believe how the team handles these first three games will go a long way toward determining where they go the rest of the season.
"Guys understand this is a tough stretch and that we've got to perform well," Moore said. "As much as we've been saying we're a great team, we have to perform well against these teams."
The Jets, playing at home in their first two games, lost by a point to Baltimore and dusted New England in the second half.
Now comes Miami. A win gives them a 2-1 record and a 2-0 mark in the division.
If the Jets are going to win, they're going to have to do it without Darrell Revise, their best defensive player, who's out with a hamstring injury. They, too, go into the game with the playing time of Edwards up in the air.
The Jets, who have had a tumultuous week already with the distraction of the Edwards arrest dominating Tuesday and Wednesday, believe they can overcome these issues.
Ryan can't seem to overstate the importance of 49ers jersey
division games, viewing them as a game-and-a-half in the standings.
"It's a huge, huge game for us," Ryan said. "If we win, we're half a game in front and if we lose it we're 2 1/2 games behind [the Dolphins].
"Obviously the fact that we were 0-2 against them last year is a burr in my saddle," Ryan went on. "It's a new year and it better have new results."

24 sep 10 Keith Bulluck says Titans never made an offer

New York Giants linebacker Keith Bulluck(notes) made it abundantly clear that he felt unwanted by the Tennessee Titans as a free agent this offseason.
Heading into Sunday's game against his old team, Bulluck said the Titans made no attempt to retain him as he rehabilitated from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
“You know what? Honestly that's B.S." Bulluck said today football jerseys
per TitanInsider. "I was in Arizona. I rehabbed with the Titans for the first months. I was in New York for the next two, and I was in Arizona until my agent said the Giants wanted me to come there for a workout.
“No one knew what was going on with me until I worked out with the Giants. And once everyone heard I had a great workout with the Giants and that I'm healthy and everything, I think that's when everything started.”
Bulluck said there was a misperception that he didn't want to come back to the Titans.
“The only thing that bothered me was the whole after I signed with New Chargers jersey
York," he said. "Honestly and truthfully before that, there was no communication with anyone. Like everything that took place after that kind of bothered me and [expletive] me off a little bit. I know the hard work I put in to put myself in position to get on the team.Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

"Of course, I would have liked to have been with the team I was with for the past decade, and that wasn't able to happen. They never reached out to me, so I did what I had to do, and the aftermath of that, we all know. So that kind of annoyed me a little bit. Other than that, it's just business, and you move on and you go.”
Titans coach Jeff Fisher didn't want to discuss Bulluck's departure.
“I'm not gonna rehash that," Fisher said. "We've discussed it before. Again, I'm happy for Keith. I'm really happy for Keith. He had 10 great years here and went through the ups and downs here and was a tremendously. I'm not going to get into what was said and what was not. The bottom line is that Keith made the decision to leave.”
Bulluck related a conversation he had with general manager Mike New Orleans Saints jersey
Reinfeldt.
“My whole thing is I was laid up in the training room and I actually asked Mike Reinfeldt what was up, and the answer that he gave me was somewhat of a joke," Bulluck said. "I don't talk to him. I don't know. I don't have a relationship with Mike Reinfeldt.”

Ronaldo inspires Real to 3-0 win over Espanyol

Dallas Cowboys jersey
It was the Portuguese forward’s first goal of the season and a third consecutive league victory for Real that lifted them to the top of the table ahead of Wednesday’s matches.
Both teams had a player sent off with around half an hour remaining and Espanyol were reduced to nine late on.
Real coach Jose Mourinho criticised the poor state of cheap nfl jerseys
the pitch after the game and also complained about the packed calendar, Tuesday’s match coming after his players were in action in the Champions League on Wednesday and in La Liga on Saturday.
“All things considered I am coming away satisfied because it’s not easy playing on a potato field, it’s not easy playing every two days and it’s not easy playing an opponent who has nothing to lose,” the Portuguese said at a news conference.
“Putting all those factors together and despite the fact that my team did not play a good match I am satisfied,” he added. “We have to improve but above all we need to rest.”
SOLID START
The visitors began brightly on a pleasantly warm night at the Bernabeu and an unmarked Jose Callejon volleyed just wide of Iker Casillas’s goal in the sixth minute.
Real responded immediately when Mesut Ozil sent Angel Di Maria clear and the Argentina winger’s curled strike was palmed narrowly over the crossbar by goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.
Espanyol’s solid start was spoiled just before the half hour when Luis Garcia handled a Ronaldo free kick in the wall and the referee pointed to the spot.
The Portuguese scored with his first attempt but was ordered to retake for what appeared to be encroachment into the area.
Espanyol made an energetic bid for an equaliser in the early stages of Saints jersey
the second period and the impressive Joan Verdu forced a sharp save from Casillas in the 53rd.
Real central defender Pepe then picked up two yellow cards in quick succession and Ernesto Galan was shown a straight red shortly after when he chopped down Ronaldo.
The game opened up and both teams had chances before Ronaldo released Higuain with a fine through ball and he beat Kameni with a powerful low shot.
France striker Karim Benzema replaced Higuain and made it 3-0 with almost his first touch, hooking the ball into the net from inside the area.
Espanyol defender Juan Forlin was dismissed late on after picking up a second yellow, apparently for dissent.
NO ADJECTIVES
Espanyol coach Mauricio Pochettino was clearly furious with the referee after the match but just about managed to restrain himself at his post-match news conference.
“I am not going to give an opinion about the referee, I won’t label him with any adjectives,” he said. “The evidence and the television footage is there for all to see. All of Europe and the whole world saw what happened. On days like this you don’t feel like talking about football. It’s useless.”
In the earlier kickoffs, David Lopez put Athletic Bilbao ahead against visiting Real Mallorca just before halftime, Mikel San Jose netted a 62nd-minute penalty and Inigo Perez scored in added time to give the Basque club a 3-0 win.
Osasuna clinched their first victory of the season, coming from behind to San Diego Chargers jersey
beat promoted Real Sociedad 3-1 thanks to goals from Walter Pandiani, Javier Camunas and Carlos Aranda after Raul Tamudo had given Sociedad the lead in the 16th minute.
Champions Barcelona will be without Lionel Messi when they host Sporting Gijon on Wednesday (1800 GMT) while Valencia can climb back to the top with a win at home to Atletico Madrid.

Sangria Hangover: Messi Dodges a Bullet

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Barcelona defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 at the Vicente Calderon, but the result wasn’t the biggest headline to come out of the match. That distinction went to Tomas Ujfalusi’s challenge on Lionel Messi. It appeared at the time that Messi had broken his ankle, but he escaped with only a sprain. This came as a massive surprise to everyone who saw both the challenge and the pictures of Messi’s ankle looking like a grapefruit.
After fearing that they had lost Messi for an extended period of football jersey
time, Barcelona will only be without him for two games. It was a massive stroke of luck for a club that, despite their talent, is lacking in serious depth. However, despite their lack of depth, most of their players are very versatile, if Messi is only out for two games, he won’t be missed too much.
The game itself, independent of the injury was a very entertaining one. Messi’s opener was probably the highlight of the day. Unsurprisingly, the central midfield players were never really in the game for Atletico Madrid as they were completely overrun by Barcelona’s midfield. Diego Forlan and the wingers showed flashes of brilliance, but Sergio Aguero’s fitness issues were apparent as he failed to have a major effect on the game.
The most interested tactical aspect of the match was probably the way that Sergio Busquets was deployed. The traditional defensive midfielder would drop back to a central defender position when Barcelona didn’t have the ball, between Gerard Pique and Carlos Puyol. It was interesting to watch what was essentially a modern Libero be deployed, a tactic that is sparsely used these days. This tactical decision allowed more freedom for Barcelona’s fullbacks and was a big part of why they dominated most of the game.
Although Real Madrid dominated their match against Real Sociedad, their questionable finishing continued as they failed to find the back of the net for a long period of time, despite creating plenty of shots. The winner was officially scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, but he would have been unlikely to score if his shot hadn’t taken a bizarre deflection off of a teammate.
Real Madrid are going to have to start finishing their chances. Eventually, they are going to run into a team that makes them pay for not doing so. Real Sociedad were almost that team when Raul Tamudo scored in the 62nd minute to equalize, but Ronaldo’s winner sealed all three points for Los Merengues. Thankfully for them, their next two opponents, Espanyol and Levante, are unlikely to be the teams that punish them for their mistakes.
The matchup between Valencia and Hercules was a particularly interesting one, as Valencia dominated the early going, started to collapse, and ultimately held on for the 2-1 victory. The first two goals in the match, Valencia’s, were truly world class finishes. Mata’s close range shot and Pablo’s rocket from outside the area gave Los Che a deserved 2-0 lead.
It appeared they were on the verge of collapse, though, as Hercules were Bills jersey
granted a penalty, which they converted, in the 43rd minute and Valencia were reduced to ten men just four minutes after halftime. Hercules created a multitude of chances after Valencia had a man shown red, but they were unable to knock down the door as Valencia held on to an important three points.
One player in particular that had a good game for Valencia before the red card was shown was midfield playmaker Tino Costa. In an earlier edition of La Furia Liga, I wrote that I thought he would struggle to re-produce his fantastic form for Montpellier in a Valencia jersey. So far, I have been proven wrong as Costa has performed admirably. Valencia were never going to replace David Silva, but by buying quality players who can create for their teammates, they might have been able to replace his output without a like for like player replacement.
Malaga vs. Sevilla was another interesting tie, as the boys from Seville did well to scrape out a 2-1 win. Malaga did much better defending during open play than they did in previous matches, but they were undone on set pieces. The winner from Martin Cacares came off of a good header, but the marking by Malaga’s defenders could have been much better.
The biggest disappointment for Malaga fans and neutrals in this match will have been the play of the center of Malaga’s midfield. After a couple of very solid performances, they did not live up to expectations and were outplayed for the majority of the match by Sevilla. Once they went down a goal, they appeared to be pretty devoid of ideas on how to bring back the deficit.
Finally, our “Lost The Plot” award for the week goes to César Muñiz Fernández, the man who officiated the match between Deportivo La Coruna and Getafe. The 2-2 draw featured two penalties granted to Depor while six yellow cards and one red card were shown to Getafe. Despite the official’s best efforts to keep them from getting points, Getafe’s Javier Arizmendi saved the day by scoring the equalizer. Mr. Fernandez, we all hope to see you in the Segunda next week.
With his brace against Levante, Villarreal striker Nilmar is the only player who had a true breakout performance. Really, it seemed like this week’s La Liga games were more about closely fought battles and team efforts than spectacular individual performances. Villarreal actually didn’t play that well against the team that is almost universally regarded as the worst in La Liga, so props to Nilmar for bailing out the Yellow Submarine. César Muñiz Fernández ? Just kidding. I think this distinction has to go to Royston Drenthe. If he had played just a little bit 49ers jersey
better, Hercules probably would have taken a point against a ten man Valencia side. On a regular basis, his partners up top David Trezeguet and Nelson Valdes could be seen getting visibly frustrated and the timing and quality of his passing. His childish fights with Miguel didn’t help matters either.

Bebe set for Man United debut in League Cup

Dallas Cowboys jersey
LONDON (AP)—Bebe will make his highly anticipated Manchester United debut in the League Cup on Wednesday, more than a month after manager Alex Ferguson signed the unproven Portuguese striker without seeing him play.
Ferguson has been forced to fend off critics who have questioned the wisdom of nfl jerseys
paying 7.4 million pounds ($11.5 million) for a player who has never featured at a higher level than the Portuguese third division.
The 68-year-old manager didn’t even both watching videos of Bebe in action before the transfer from Vitoria Guimaraes was completed last month, relying instead on the recommendations of former assistant manager Carlos Queiroz and United’s scout.
Some English papers have already branded Bebe an expensive flop based on his appearances for United’s reserve team.
But Ferguson is ready to include Bebe in the first team for the first time as United begins its League Cup defense at second-tier side Scunthorpe in the third round.
“A lot of my young players will play. Bebe is training very well,” Ferguson said Tuesday. “He’ll be involved tomorrow night.”
And Lisbon-born Bebe has appealed for patience.
“I am going to be a brilliant player for Manchester United,” he said. “After a couple more games I will be better. I have to be fitter because it’s a different type of football in England.”
Bebe left Estrela Amadora three months ago after the team gained promotion to Portugal’s second division, but only featured in six friendlies for Vitoria Guimaraes before being lured to United.
“I can play on both sides, on the left and the right,” Bebe said. “It doesn’t make any difference which side.”
The Premier League’s leading teams use England’s second-tier knockout competition to Chargers jersey
give young players vital first-team experience.
“It allows me to keep everybody happy in terms of giving people games and we’ve reached the last two finals, which has its obvious advantages,” Ferguson said. “Playing at Wembley and competing for medals on the big stage is terrific for players’ development.”
United beat Aston Villa 2-1 in last season’s final to win the tournament for the fourth time and the Birmingham club’s third-round match against Blackburn on Wednesday will see Gerard Houllier take charge for the first time.
“We will not be putting out a lesser side,” Houllier said. “The League Cup was the first trophy I won at Liverpool and, if you win five games, you are at Wembley.”
Houllier was named Villa manager on Sept. 8 but has had to wait to officially take over because of contractual issues with the French Football Federation.
Houllier intends to alter Villa’s playing style and training methods.
“In the short term I need to know the players more and they need to get used to the different types of training—more continental in terms of tactics— and a variety of drills,” Houllier said. “It will take time to implement and be accepted. You come with philosophies and beliefs and need to convince the players to do them.
“Will we be playing in a different way? Obviously it won’t be done overnight. You can’t change habits in the middle of a competition. It has got to be gradual. The first mission is to get results, the second is to be entertaining.”
Sol Campbell, the 36-year-old former England defender, is set to make his Newcastle debut at Premier League champion Chelsea.
In another all-Premier League match, out-of-favor Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given is due to make his first appearance of the season at West Bromwich Albion.
Liverpool could hand Australia keeper Brad Jones his first appearance since joining from Bears jersey
Middlesbrough last month in the home match against Northampton.
“Goalkeepers have got to be a very special breed. You need a character who is good enough for the Premier League but who also understands that there’s another goalkeeper at the club who’s probably better than him (Pepe Reina),” Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson said.

Clifton hurting, Bulaga might start at LT for Pack

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Veteran Chad Clifton remains the Green Bay Packers' starting left tackle.
That doesn't mean he'll start against the nfl jerseys
Chicago Bears next Monday night.
Clifton was benched in favor of first-round rookie Bryan Bulaga during Sunday's victory over the Buffalo Bills, and Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he made the move because Clifton ''didn't look healthy.'' Continued knee soreness is putting Clifton's availability against the Bears in doubt.
''He's our starting left tackle,'' McCarthy said. ''He's battling through a rough spot right now medically. We have Bryan Bulaga getting ready. I thought Bryan played well with his opportunity yesterday.''
Facing a Monday night game, the Packers would have an extra day to get their rookie ready.
''It helps you, one more day of preparation,'' McCarthy said. ''We'll take advantage of that, and I'm sure Bryan will take a lot of the practice reps this week. We'll make sure Bryan's ready, and we'll do what we need to do to get Chad ready.''
Making his first career start against the Bears at Soldier Field could be a big deal for Bulaga, a native of Crystal Lake, Ill. - although any excitement might be tempered by the prospect of facing Julius Peppers.
Bulaga went into the draft after his junior year at Iowa, and was taken No. 23 overall by the Packers.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Bulaga played well Sunday, other than a false start penalty in the fourth quarter.
''Bulaga, from day one, he's fit in personality-wise very well here and I like his Cowboys jersey
work ethic and I have a lot of confidence when he's in the game,'' Rodgers said after Sunday's game. ''Other than the jump on a hard count, I think he did a nice job for us.''
Although Bulaga is expected to become the Packers' long-term left tackle, he was given a chance to compete with veteran Daryn Colledge for the starting left guard job in training camp. Colledge won the job in camp after Bulaga missed time with a right hip flexor injury. On Sunday, they lined up next to each other.
''I know he was nervous, but at the same time he was extremely excited,'' Colledge said Sunday. ''He got out there and I thought he did a good job from what I could tell. He had one false start just like me so the left side kind of held down the penalties. I think he was excited to get out there and show what he's got.''
Colledge called the transition seamless, although the rest of the linemen did try to simplify the calls they make at the line of scrimmage.
''When it's me and Bulaga in there, I just want him to settle down so I'm going to tell him what we're doing and we're just going to roll,'' Colledge said. ''I thought he did a great job. He was physical in his plays and he blocked well.''
As might be expected of an 11-year NFL veteran, Clifton has a history of knee issues and was receiving medical treatment Monday.
Clifton, who had arthroscopic surgery on both knees and both shoulders before the Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
2009 season, had swelling in his right knee toward the end of training camp this year and sat out practice.
McCarthy said the team will take the week to determine whether Clifton will start against the Bears, and Bulaga will likely get a significant number of snaps at left tackle in practice.
''He's played a lot of football,'' McCarthy said of Clifton. ''He's had a number of surgeries, both knees, shoulders, and it's some wear-and-tear. We just feel that we need to treat him accordingly. They're trying different things, and hopefully he'll be ready for Chicago. There's really nothing else to talk about.''

Colts get back to normal with route of Giants

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Look out AFC, Indianapolis has its swagger back.
One week after frustration and anger permeated the Colts' locker room, a looser, more confident bunch returned Monday with jokes, laughter and a much-needed sense of relief.
''I think we can travel with it,'' defensive captain cheap nfl jerseys
Gary Brackett said of the recovered bravado, drawing laughter. ''I think we'll check that bag and make sure it's not left anywhere.''
It was a stark contrast from last week when Indy's embarrassing 34-24 loss at Houston put the unthinkable in play - a possible 0-2 start for the first time since Peyton Manning's rookie season, 1998.
Not a chance.
If Indy proved anything with Sunday's 38-14 blowout against the Giants, it was this: The defending AFC champs can be as good as they ever have been.
The NFL's worst running team last season ran for 160 yards on 43 carries against the Giants, the first time Indy has topped 40 rushing attempts since October 2007. Joseph Addai finished with 92 yards, his highest total since November 2008, and Manning was especially efficient, throwing for 255 yards and three touchdowns with a passer rating of 145.5.
The offensive line, a big target following Indy's season-opening loss, allowed only one sack, created big holes for Addai and Donald Brown and kept Manning upright most of the night against Pro Bowl defensive ends Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora.
And Indy (1-1) executed its game plan to perfection.
''Our goal was to take advantage of how they were playing us,'' left tackle Charlie Johnson said. ''We thought we'd get a lot of nickel and dime packages from them, and we knew we'd have to run against that. And we wanted to play fast because we think we're better when we do that.''
New York (1-1) spent the whole night playing catch-up, after falling into a 24-0 hole, and played right into the strengths of the Colts' defense.
The big cushion allowed Pro Bowl ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis to tee off on Manning's brother, Eli, combining for four sacks and forced three Eli Manning fumbles.
Just like it's drawn up.
''When our offense jumps up by two or three touchdowns, you know what Vikings jersey
time it is,'' Mathis said. ''It's time to eat, and he (the quarterback) is the food.''
It was Indianapolis' first victory since the AFC championship. The Colts lost the Super Bowl, all four preseason games and the opener in Houston before a week's worth of sharp practices and a return to a simple philosophy for the beleaguered defense got them back on the right track.
''I think we had to get back to the basics,'' cornerback Kelvin Hayden said. ''It seemed like the guys were trying to do a little more than their own job in the first game. This week, everybody kind of said 'Hold your ground and play smart, fast and physical.'''
It was so frustrating for the Giants that Brandon Jacobs even tossed his helmet, unintentionally, into the stands.
The Colts are hoping the balanced offense and opportunistic defense from Sunday night will be the norm from here on out as they try to become the first Super Bowl loser to make it back to the big game since Buffalo returned for the fourth straight time after the 1993 season.
Next up is Denver, a team Indy has beaten four straight times and that could be starting two rookie cornerbacks this weekend. Nine-time Pro Bowler Champ Bailey left the stadium Sunday on crutches after hurting his right foot or ankle. Coach Josh McDaniels said Bailey doesn't have any broken bones, he didn't say how much time Bailey might miss.
The Colts aren't worried about Denver's potential problems, though.
Nope, they just want to keep improving - and demonstrating that the real Colts showed up in Week 2.
''You can call it a wake-up call or whatever, but the Houston Colts jersey
Texans are good, too. They get paid, too, and they came out with a good game plan, just like we did last night,'' defensive tackle Daniel Muir said. ''You know, when you get punched in the face, that's exactly what you've got go to do, fight back, and we got punched in the face.''

Monday's buzz: Latest from the NFL

Dallas Cowboys jersey
As expected, the Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed veteran QB Byron Leftwich on Monday. Leftwich was released on Saturday.
Leftwich, an eight-year veteran, was football jersey
acquired by the Steelers this past April in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a seventh-round draft pick. Leftwich spent the 2009 season with Tampa Bay after playing for the Steelers in 2008.
He began his NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being selected with the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He played four seasons with the Jaguars (2003-06) before joining the Atlanta Falcons in 2007.
The Steelers made room on their roster for Leftwich by waiving first-year DT Steve McLendon, who was signed on Saturday.
Leftwich is now one of three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but only one is healthy, Charlie Batch. Leftwich suffered a sprained knee during a preseason game and was listed on the injury report last week.
Atlanta Falcons RB Michael Turner is scheduled to practice this week when the team returns to the field on Wednesday, according to head coach Mike Smith. Turner is expected to start this Sunday at the New Orleans Saints.
Turner got off to a great start against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, but left the game in the first half with a groin injury. Backup FB/RB Jason Snelling took over and did a great job en route to posting 186 total yards and three touchdowns.
In no great surprise, Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey has decided to make a change at the quarterback position. Veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will start this Sunday at the New England Patriots, replacing Trent Edwards. Fitzpatrick beat out Brian Brohm for the No. 2 role during the preseason.
Fitzpatrick signed a three-year, $8.25 million deal with Buffalo in March of 2009 which included roughly $3 million guaranteed. His $1.82 million base salary for 2009 was guaranteed. The rest of the guaranteed money came in the form of a $1.17 million signing bonus.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid confirmed Monday to reporters that Buffalo Bills jersey
starters QB Kevin Kolb (concussion) and MLB Stewart Bradley (concussion) are scheduled to practice this week and will play Sunday at the Jacksonville Jaguars unless they suffer a setback. Both players were cleared to practice and play over the past weekend.
In other injury news, starting DE Brandon Graham (shoulder) should be ok according to Reid. Graham had an MRI on Monday which showed he had either a strain or spasm in his shoulder.
Also of note, rookie RB Joique Bell has not been signed off the Buffalo Bills practice squad. Bell is flying to Philadelphia’s training complex to take a physical, according to his agent, Manvel Trice III.
The Philadelphia Eagles appear poised to sign rookie RB Joique Bell off the Buffalo Bills practice squad, Bell said on his Twitter account. Bell said he was on his way to Philadelphia today.
The expected move to sign Bell is curious because Philadelphia already has three running backs on their 53-man roster. They also have rookie RB Martell Mallett on their practice squad. Head coach Andy Reid did not list any of his running backs as injured during his Monday press conference.
Bell (5-11, 220), who is known for his inside power running, was signed as an undrafted free-agent by Buffalo in late April. He was waived by Buffalo on Sept. 4, but signed with their practice squad the next day.
In no great surprise, Carolina Panthers rookie Jimmy Clausen will take over as the starting quarterback when the team takes on the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday, head coach John Fox confirmed to reporters on Monday.
Clausen, who was selected in the second-round, came off the bench in relief of struggling starter Matt Moore during the fourth quarter of yesterday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Moore threw three interceptions during the team’s Week One loss at the New York Giants. Moore has also been sacked eight times in the first two games.
The Pittsburgh Steelers only have two quarterbacks currently on their 53-man roster. Because of that, the team is scheduled to work out free agent QB Levi Brown early this week, a source confirmed.
Dennis Dixon, who started the first two games, suffered a sprained knee during Sunday’s victory at the Tennessee Titans. Charlie Batch, who replaced him, is the only healthy quarterback. Starter Ben Roethlisberger has two more games to serve on his four-game suspension. The team released QB Byron Leftwich on Saturday, Steelers jersey
but he’s expected to re-sign some time on Monday.
Brown, who was selected in the seventh-round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, also worked out for the New York Giants last week.

Sir Alex Ferguson Wary Of Roy Hodgson As Manchester United Gear Up For 'The Fixture' Against Liverpool

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed the extent of his respect for Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson, as the two men ready their teams for the eagerly-anticipated Premier League clash on Sunday at Old Trafford.
Feguson knows that Hodgson is a wily, experienced campaigner who is nfl jerseys
capable of preparing a team to beat anyone. With so much intensity surrounding this clash of long-time Lancashire rivals, Ferguson is not falling into the trap of underestimating his opponent.
"Roy has the experience," the Scot said at his pre-match press conference.
"He has gathered a wealth of experience in Italy, Switzerland Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
and Finland and the job he did at Fulham was absolutely extraordinary.
"But our approach will not change. We have to express ourselves the way we always do.
"I have known him for a long time. I first met him in 1987 when I went on an aborted trip to Malmo.
"It was a European tie against Ajax and they abandoned it after one minute. He was at the game and we went for dinner afterwards."
Meanwhile, Ferguson is in no doubt that the game against Liverpool is the one that really counts each season for anyone connected with United.
"I sound like a parrot but this is 'the fixture'. There Minnesota Vikings jersey
is no question about that," he asserted.
"It doesn't change. The form fluctuates quite a bit but we won the last game so hopefully that turns it back towards us again."

Pick Your Manchester United Team To Play Liverpool

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Arsenaland Tottenham fans may see otherwise, Newcastle United and Sunderland followers may choke into their tea and Everton supporters would just laugh, but Manchester United vs Liverpool is the most volatile powder keg of a match in the country. The two most successful English teams, both from the nfl jersey
north-west, both wear red, both have extensive histories and their sets of supporters are fiercely passionate.
It is always a recipe for a classic, and this Sunday they Colts jersey
square up for arguably the biggest game in the Premier League so far this season.
With Antonio Valencia injured in United’s Champions League match, Sir Alex Ferguson has a headache over who he selects to play on the right wing. Nani may be moved to the right wing with the evergreen Ryan Giggs starting on the left.
There will be wholesale changes in the line-up, as Cowboys jersey
Ferguson will want to field his best team to face his bitter rivals. After resting Dimitar Berbatov in midweek, the Scot is likely to bring him back to partner Wayne Rooney, and Edwin Van der Sar will replace Tomasz Kuszczak in goal. Perennially injured Owen Hargreaves misses out.

Alessandro Del Piero: Juventus Will Never Give Up

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero is far from satisfied with the 3-3 draw against Lech Poznan in the Europa League on Thursday, but believes the Bianconeri will improve as the season progresses.
The Bianconeri went down 2-0, before fighting back to take a nfl throwback jerseys
3-2 lead, only to be pegged back in injury time and held to one point in Turin.
"We can't be satisfied after the 3-3 draw with Lech Poznan," he said to the club's official website.
"Beyond the disappointment, however, we must give the correct interpretation to what happens on the field at this time of the season. The general context and the path of growth we have taken that cannot be interrupted by one half of football.
"A positive note was the attitude that enabled us to overturn the result after we went down 2-0. Like against Sampdoria, we have proven we will never give up and have the capacity to emerge from difficult situations.
"At this stage it is an important starting point, but we must do more. Mistakes are there and we must improve and we don't intend to ignore them, rather we must be critical with ourselves to improve."
Del Piero and his team-mates take on Udinese on September 19 in Serie A.
CHICAGO (AP)—American goalkeeper Hope Solo will Steelers jersey
have right shoulder surgery and miss qualifying for the Women’s World Cup.
The U.S. Soccer Federation said Friday that the 29-year-old will be sidelined for five to six months, a timetable that should allow her to return for the start of the World Cup on June 26.
Dr. James Andrews will operate Wednesday on what may be a torn labrum.
Solo has 91 international appearances. She leads Women’s Professional Soccer this season with 104 saves for St. Louis and Atlanta.
Milan defender Thiago Silva picked up a thigh injury in the 2-0 loss to Cesena last week, which forced him to miss the Champions League victory over Auxerre on Wednesday.
But his spell on the sidelines could be short-lived as he could return to play versus Catania, according to coach Massimiliano Allegri.
"We will see today, he is doing reasonably well after Vikings jersey
training. I confirm there's a chance he could be on the pitch," Allegri said at today's press conference, when asked about the status of the defender.
The 25-year-old was a key man for the Rossoneri making 35 appearances in Serie A last season. Milan have three points from their first two league matches in the new campaign

Gene Keady part of Steve Lavin's team

Cowboys jersey
When Steve Lavin takes the floor for the first time as head coach at St. John’s, he plans to have Gene Keady sitting alongside him.
In fact, Lavin intends to formally announce his nfl jersey
mentor as '"executive assistant" as soon as next week.
“Well that’s news to me," Keady laughed. “I haven’t seen any papers or gotten a contract yet."
The fact is, Keady is coming. He’s just going to make Lavin suffer a little bit first.
Keady has a list of critical demands for Lavin, his one-time assistant: a driver, a free room at a posh hotel somewhere in New York, a "certain amount of money," and most importantly, someone who will take care of his beloved toy poodle, Queenie.
He’s not joking. Queenie is Keady’s last link to his late wife, Pat, so the dog’s care is of real importance.
Lavin said in his role Keady won’t be able to coach on the floor or recruit, but he’ll be around for games and practice preparation and as a sounding board -- Lavin’s own basketball Yoda, if you will.
Lavin also envisions eavesdropping on some great conversations Colts jersey
between Keady, former St. John’s head coach Lou Carnesecca, and when he’s able to visit from the West Coast, Lavin’s dad, Cap, who played at the University of San Francisco in the 1950s.
“Can you imagine those stories?” Lavin said.
Keady can.
He chuckled at the mere thought of it.
“Oh, that will be like some old man soap opera,’’ he said.
Keady doesn’t need the job. The former Purdue coach, who will be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame next week, is quite content in his retirement. He just sold his house in Lafayette, Ind., and is building a smaller home; he’s got a nice little gig with the Big Ten Network; his other former assistant, Matt Painter, has a top-five program at Purdue right down the road.
He's also got places to go. On Wednesday, he was floating somewhere between Greenland and Halifax, enjoying a cruise with some friends.
But he’ll chuck all that and move to Manhattan for six months -- from October to April -- for one reason.
“If I can work with Steve Lavin, I’ll probably do it,’’ Cowboys jersey
Keady said. “He’s pretty special to me. If I could repay him for helping me, that would be great. It’s a great opportunity to do something really special.’’

Jewish groups still support Bruce Pearl

Cowboys jersey
I've spent much of this week hunched in the fetal position. Why? Somehow, I came down with some sort of strange strep throat/flu/cold/sars hybrid, and it's totally demoralized me. Today is Day 5 of the misery; I gave up around Day 2. It's been a struggle to stand on my feet for more than a few minutes at a time. Breathing is a nfl throwback jerseys
battle. Talking is almost out of the question.
And, all things considered, I'm pretty sure my week has been better than Bruce Pearl's.
After last Friday's tearful mea culpa in front of the media -- in which Pearl announced he misled NCAA investigators and made "serious mistakes" in his handling of Tennessee's recruitment policies -- Pearl got more bad news later this week, when the world learned that the NCAA has a photo that proves Pearl spent time with recruit Tony Craft on an unofficial visit in his home. When asked about the photo, Pearl and his assistants reportedly said they did not recognize the photo's origin or background. Even though, you know, it was taken in Chicago Bears jersey
Pearl's house. Right.
Fortunately, there is good news for Pearl -- and not just in the form of an airtight contract that will make him almost impossible to fire unless the NCAA hands down a ruling with the word "significant" in it.
This good news comes from the Jewish groups -- including Maccabi USA, whose motto is "Building Jewish Pride Through Sports" -- Pearl has worked for and supported for years. In the face of controversy, those groups are supporting him back:
“We are supportive of him," Jed Margolis, the executive director of Maccabi USA, told JTA in an interview Tuesday. "People make mistakes, and he has owned up and taken responsibility for them, and I feel very comfortable.”
“His impact on the games was very positive, and not just because of the medal he won," Margolis said. "He was a good role model and teacher, and had a wonderful experience in Israel. He was a real shining light for us.”
The organization’s president, Ron Carner, also sent an open letter to the embattled coach offering his support.
“In the past few days I have been contacted by many of our board members and executive committee as well as our athletes -- all unanimously agree that I should write in an official capacity to reassure you that the entire Maccabi USA family is behind you during this trying time,” Carner wrote.
That makes two public shows of New Orleans Saints jersey
support for Pearl since last Friday's announcement, the other coming from Pearl's top two recruits in the 2011 class. Neither display is going to keep Pearl out of the NCAA's boiling pot, but you have to imagine both mean quite a bit to the embattled coach all the same.

Rex Ryan's philosophy: Come and get it

Indianapolis Colts jersey

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan sat down with ESPN sideline reporter Michelle Tafoya for the "Sunday Conversation."
Among the topics were Monday night's game against the cheap nfl jerseys
Baltimore Ravens (his former team), his relationship with Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and what cornerback Darrelle Revis means to the Jets.
Most compelling were Ryan's dismissive response to the idea his bravado puts his team in the crosshairs.
"Doesn't matter because we're putting a target on your team," Ryan said. "The target you put on our back isn't as anywhere close to the one we're putting on you. That's it. We're here on a mission to win a Super Bowl, and we're not here to make friends or Minnesota Vikings jersey
anything else. That's our mission.
"Bill Belichick is a way better cach than I am. There's no question. But I'm not afraid of him or anybody else. I know I'm a great coach, but more importantly I know the people in my organization. Our organization is as good as there is. We're set up to succeed because of the people around me."
Tafoya also asked Ryan about a recent comment he made to USA Today reporter Jon Saraceno about wanting the Jets to be hated around the league.
"The fact is, if Indianapolis Colts jersey
everybody hates you, you got to be pretty good," Ryan said. "Nobody hates a team that's going to win five games or something like that. They hate teams that are formidable. So, yes, I want to be that team."

Why didn't Colts do more on O-line?

Indianapolis Colts jersey

The mailbag is filling up with notes from panicked Colts fans.
The gist of their questions: Isn’t it time for the Colts to make a move to get one of the disgruntled offensive linemen out there: Marcus McNeill or Logan Mankins?
Sure, if the Colts found them a football jersey
system fit, adding either would give a big boost to the offensive line.
But it’s uncharacteristic for the Colts to go outside looking for help. Those guys would be costly, and making a move would amount to a concession that Indy underestimated its offensive line issues.
That’s the confusing part of this.
Bill Polian was quick to say the offensive line was a primary issue in the Super Bowl loss to New Orleans.
But the Colts did little to fix it. Left guard Ryan Lilja was released. Two street free agents, Adam Terry and Andy Alleman, didn’t stick. Only one of eight draft picks was spent on an offensive lineman, and Jacques McClendon was not active in Houston.
The Colts couldn’t do major free-agent shopping because the CBA limited the top teams’ ability to do so.
Still, with the head honcho saying it was a concern, it sure seems like the Colts could have done more on the line to ensure better protection and better run blocking.
On a bad foot, Charlie Johnson put forth a courageous effort against Mario Williams. But Johnson’s not cast as a left tackle by a lot of personnel folks. If Indy had a franchise left tackle, Johnson would likely be better as a guard. Polian missed on Tony Ugoh in 2007. The guy they hoped to be the heir to Tarik Glenn was waived/injured and is now on IR.
Putting Peyton Manning at risk is Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
a dangerous game. He was face down on the turf, an official checking on him after one hit. He bounced up. But will he always? He absorbed two sacks, eight additional hits and stuff that didn't register in the stat book.
The guys the Colts do have will play better. Manning can continue to get the ball out quickly and make pressure less of an issue. Joseph Addai can make the most of what’s there. Not every team has a Williams-like threat to mess things up.
In Sunday's loss, the Colts didn’t choose to go with two tight ends very often, leaving Johnson mostly on his own. Put tight end Brody Eldridge in to help the way I imagined and you’re taking one target out of the arsenal. Maybe the Colts do that more if they find it necessary. The choice at Reliant Stadium was to throw it more quickly with more options running routes.
I don’t expect Polian to be making calls about McNeill or Mankins Monday.
Polian talked before camp about throwing all the linemen in a pot and seeing who came out as the best group. Injuries to Jeff Saturday, Johnson and others made that system more difficult and there was no time to build continuity with the Indianapolis Colts jersey
five who started against the Texans.
Still, today, I can understand why Colts’ faithful are wondering today why there wasn’t more in that pot.

Free Head Exam: Detroit Lions

Indianapolis Colts jersey

1. There will be a lot of discussion about what the Lions might or might not lose during a short-term transition from quarterback Matthew Stafford to Shaun Hill. But if the Lions take an approach similar to the one they used at Soldier Field, the impact will be minimal. Before Stafford departed with a right shoulder injury, the Lions were extraordinarily cautious with what most of us agree is a nice complement of explosive offensive weapons. Stafford completed 11 of nfl jersey
15 passes, but averaged a low 5.53 yards per attempt. He targeted wide receivers on three passes and connected only once, an 18-yard toss to Nate Burleson late in the second quarter. Receiver Calvin Johnson noted the Bears were using a Cover 2 scheme, which often induces teams to run the ball. But when some of your team's best players are downfield passers and catchers, sometimes you have to dictate the terms of engagement rather than taking what the defense gives you. I'm sure the Bears were thrilled to see the Lions take the bait.
2. Fantasy owners got the big answer they were seeking on tailback Jahvid Best. Yes, as we discussed all summer, the Lions really do intend for him to be their primary back right away. That includes goal-line situations, where Best converted touchdown runs of seven and four yards. (Backup Kevin Smith was inactive, in fact.) But am I being a party-pooper by suggesting the rest of Dallas Cowboys jersey
Best's afternoon was pretty underwhelming? The Bears defense certainly played a role in that. But the Lions should have had more success with the numbers advantage afforded by the Bears' Cover 2 scheme. In that situation, you would hope that Best would have gained more than 20 yards on 14 carries. Take away the two touchdowns, and Best netted nine yards on 12 carries. That's not going to fit anyone's definition of explosive.
3. I imagine this isn't anything new for people who follow the AFC or the Tennessee Titans in particular, but Sunday illustrated what an absolute beast Kyle Vanden Bosch is. Let me throw some numbers at you. As a starting defensive end, Vanden Bosch led the Lions with 10 solo tackles. Throw in an assist and he was in on 11 tackles overall. He wasn't officially credited with a quarterback hit, but I counted three plays where Vanden Bosch got to Bears quarterback Jay Cutler just after the throw. Those are the kinds of plays that contribute, if nothing else, to inaccuracy later in the game. Remember when we discussed Vanden Bosch chasing ball carriers far downfield during training camp? Guess who made the tackle on Bears receiver Devin Aromashodu following a 20-yard reception in the first quarter Sunday? Vanden Bosch. Young Lions players, make sure you're watching this guy.
And here is one issue I still don't get:
I've suggested that game officials correctly followed the letter of the NFL law in disallowing Calvin Johnson's apparent game-winning touchdown with 24 seconds remaining. It's true that there is a "process of the catch" continuation that applies in this situation. That's all a matter of interpretation, however. My question, one we first raised last season when it cost the Green Bay Packers a touchdown, is about intent. What is the purpose of this rule as currently constituted? Why does the "process of Indianapolis Colts jersey
the catch" take so long? If a receiver catches a ball and has possession with two feet in bounds, shouldn't the play be dead at that point? Unless officials mistakenly extended that catch process too far in this case, NFL rules say it is not. I just don't know why.

FIGC chief Abete hopeful over Serie A strike

Steelers jersey

Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Giancarlo Abete is optimistic a compromise can be reached to prevent a strike from Serie A players on the weekend of September 25-26.
Abete is acting as cheap nfl jerseys
arbitrator in the dispute between the Italian Players' Association (AIC) and the Lega Calcio, with talks starting on Monday in Rome.
The AIC members are unhappy the Lega Calcio have not renewed the collective bargaining agreement which expired in June.
A strike was announced on Friday but Abete is confident that can Dallas Cowboys jersey
be averted through negotiation.
"We must find an agreement," Abete said. "I think over the last few hours we have received positive signs that we can avoid the strike and ensure the games go ahead."
Lega Calcio chief Maurizio Beretta added: "I think the talks will give us the opportunity to understand each other and strike a deal. But we need to ensure the economic sustainability of the model; costs and revenues must be equal."
AIC boss Sergio Campana dismissed suggestions of Indianapolis Colts jersey
player greed. The players' action has in some quarters been labelled a "strike of millionaires" but Campana dismissed that as "inappropriate".
Monday's meeting ended without a resolution, and the two parties are now due to meet again on Wednesday morning to continue talks.

Revis holdout could be repeated in 2012

Cowboys jersey

Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis(notes) is already thinking about his next holdout, which likely will come in 2012, according to reports.
The contract that Revis just signed with the Jets will pay nfl jersey
him $32.5 million across 2010 and 2011, but drops to $13.5 million in 2012 and 2013 combined, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Barring a “true retirement contract,” there will be more negotiations in two years.
Asked by Sports Illustrated’s Peter King Dallas Cowboys jersey
whether he would hold out again after the first two years of this deal, Revis replied, "That's a great question. If I continue to play ball like I usually do, we'll probably be back at that same position we were this year."

Jets worried about OLG spot

We've been hearing a number of whispers from around the AFC East, including the following:
• Jets coaches are worried about their interior offensive line. The team had hoped that second-round pick Vladimir Ducasse(notes) would win the OLG spot vacated by Alan Faneca(notes), who was released in the offseason. But Ducasse struggled in training nfl throwback jerseys
camp, and the job has gone to Matt Slauson(notes), a sixth-round pick in 2009 who appeared in three games last season.
• Cornerback is the strongest position on the Bills. Leodis McKelvin(notes), the No. 11 pick in the 2008 draft, is the team's nickel back, but that's not due to a lack of production. According to our team observers, his spot on the depth chart is not an indictment of McKelvin but instead a compliment for starting RCB Drayton Florence(notes), who had 11 pass deflections last season.
• When the Patriots cut Derrick Burgess(notes), they Dallas Cowboys jersey
showed confidence in rookie OLB Jermaine Cunningham(notes) being their long-term guy on the outside, even though he might not start in Week One as he continues to recover from an ankle sprain. We hear that Cunningham is big, tough and physical and can set the edge better than the Patriots' outside linebackers did last season.

• While rookie Koa Misi(notes) is likely the Dolphins' strong-side linebacker of the future, he will share time with Ikaika Alama-Francis(notes) to start the season. We hear Alama-Francis is better at setting the edge, and Misi is better in pass coverage and a better pass rusher, so expect them to rotate on running and passing downs.
• Randy Moss(notes) made headlines again, telling CBS Sports that he doesn't feel wanted by the Patriots. Moss' contract is up at the end of this year, and this can go one of two ways for New England. Moss is a guy whose feelings have dictated his play before, but Minnesota Vikings jersey
he will also be playing for a new contract.

Crowder out for Dolphins’ game

Cowboys jersey

MIAMI (AP)—Miami Dolphins inside linebacker Channing Crowder(notes) has been ruled out for Sunday’s opener at Buffalo because of a lingering groin injury.
Crowder hasn’t practiced since Aug. 17 and didn’t football jerseys
accompany the Dolphins on their flight Saturday.
Tim Dobbins(notes), acquired from San Dallas Cowboys jersey
Diego in an offseason trade, will start in place of Crowder. The Dolphins will have new starters at eight positions.
Crowder has missed 10 games since 2007 because of injuries.

Cowboys jersey

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid are interested in securing the signing of Ajax’s promising young defender Gregory van der Wiel, according to reports.
Goal.com Spain comments that the Dutch club expected to cash in nfl jerseys
on the right-back after his performances at the World Cup, but after negotiations with Bayern Munich broke down, the 22-year-old remained in Amsterdam.
However, interest now appears to be Dallas Cowboys jersey
growing again, with Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho ready to show concrete interest in bringing Van der Wiel to the Primera Division.
Ajax are thought to be looking for in the region of Minnesota Vikings jersey
€18m for their starlet, who was one of Oranje’s emerging talents in South Africa, and both Barcelona and Real Madrid consider this valuation acceptable.
It is thought that discussions are likely to begin over the coming weeks over a possible January transfer, with los Blancos the more likely having failed in their bid to sign Brazilian defender Maicon during the summer.

Tottenham Manager Harry Redknapp Confirms Six-Week Ankle Injury Lay-Off For Jermain Defoe

Cowboys jersey

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed Jermain Defoe's ankle injury picked up on England duty will rule him out for at least six weeks.

Defoe, 27, picked up the injury in the 3-1 Euro 2012 qualifying victory cheap nfl jerseys
against Switzerland on Tuesday night.

After being inspected by the Spurs medical staff on Minnesota Vikings jersey
his return home, the striker is set to stay on the sidelines until mid-October, and Redknapp has now confirmed his charge has picked up a "bad sprain".

He said: "Even if it's a bad sprain, you're still talking about six weeks or so, because it's a nasty one."

The Pougatch Perspective: Leaving Out Frank Lampard Could Be The Biggest Decision Of Fabio Capello's England Reign

Cowboys jersey
Once again everything's getting on the right track with England. Two fine performances and two much-needed results that should give the squad confidence going forward. The only drawback for some is Fabio Capello's announcement that he will step down at the helm after Euro 2012, but football jersey
I don't think it's a great surprise that the Italian will be moving on in two years' time — I think that was always his plan.

I suppose the timing of it is a bit strange, however. Pundits have already asked 'Why has he decided to announce that now?' but really, after a good week professionally that really took a lot of the pressure off his shoulders, he's probably just given a straight answer to a straight question.

After England's two wins he's probably a lot happier about his position, and feels a bit more freedom. The important thing is his impending departure doesn't distract the players or detract from their performances, and I don't think it will. Hopefully performances will continue to improve as the main tournament draws nearer.

Between now and then the Italian certainly has a number of decisions to make — with Frank Lampard one player who now finds himself with a lot of work to do. Gerrard had two excellent matches in the Chelsea man's absence, and the team looked to have found a certain amount of balance across the midfield, with Gerrard and Gareth Barry looking solid as a central midfield tandem.

Is Capello going to break up that system in order to bring Lampard back into the middle? I don't think he will be particularly keen to, if only because one is required to play more of a holding role — which Barry currently occupies — which neither of the other two really prefer, and wouldn't be able to cover among themselves.

So, if that isn't a viable option, do you then bring back Lampard and play Gerrard wide left again? That would have to be an enormous call to make after the mixed results it brought at the World Cup, and obviously it would immediately be looked at as a backwards step by the media and general public. But if he wants to include Lampard again, then he doesn't have too many other options. Gerrard did well in the captaincy, so that is a factor as well. Rio Ferdinand wants to keep the armband, and he's been very public about that, and if you take it away from him he's not going to be pleased. He'll be professional, but he's very proud to be captain and it would be disappointing if it was taken away from him. So Dallas Cowboys jersey
while Gerrard might be a first name on the teamsheet, it might be too much to give him the armband just because Ferdinand's missed a number of games.

In many respects Capello's decision over Lampard is the biggest call of his England career — and his club-mate John Terry as well. If you bring Lampard back in, then by definition it takes something away from Gerrard and his attacking abilities (as it would Lampard), and similar questions are posed with Terry. A lot will depend on Ferdinand and his fitness, but Phil Jagielka came in and played really well in both the qualifying games, showing he has a future at this level.

Could Capello stick with Jagielka? I absolutely think he could, with Ferdinand coming back alongside him, but of course none of us can know for sure. What we do know for sure, however, is that what Capello does with his Chelsea duo is a big, big decision he will soon have to make.

Houllier has earned chance to prove himself a Villan

Welcome back to the Premier League Gerard Houllier, but six years out of it is a long time to be away. The league evolves very, very quickly and he has a job on his hands to adapt once more to the rigours and unique challenges it presents.

Having said that, he does know the country and the league well and did have some notable successes in his stint at Liverpool, with that famous treble cup-winning season in 2001 being at the top of the list. But on the other hand he could never bring the Anfield fans the title they are so desperate for — but neither did Rafa Benitez, so he's in good company. I have nothing against the Frenchman's appointment, but I do think it is a shame that an Englishman has been overlooked for the role. Tottenham are the only big English club to have an English manager in Harry Redknapp, and that's both a disappointing and worrying state of affairs.

Reportedly only one British manager was on the final four-man shortlist for the job at Villa Park, which tells its own story. It's no wonder we have an Italian at the helm of our national side when it seems viable candidates at club level simply aren't coming through.

Not that Villa fans have necessarily been bowled over by Houllier's appointment. There wasn't universal emnity towards the Frenchman and his arrival, but a sizeable section were obviously lukewarm to the idea. But I'm glad that didn't have any bearing on Randy Lerner's decision.

Ultimately, the owner has to make the decisions based Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
on what he thinks is right and the advice he gets from those whose opinions he trusts. It's Lerner's money that goes into the club, and in the end he has every right to choose the manager that he believes fits the requirements of the job.

Brian Laudrup vows to win cancer fight

Steelers jersey

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Former Denmark and Chelsea striker Brian Laudrup has disclosed he is battling against lymphatic cancer, a fight the 41-year-old insisted Wednesday he would win.
Laudrup revealed his plight in a statement, saying he football jerseys
had been "shocked by the doctor's diagnosis".
"There's a hard battle in front of me, a battle that I am going to win," said Laudrup, who was part of Denmark's 1992 Europan championship winning team.
He added that he had been heartened by his doctors' "very optimistic comments".
The former forward, the brother of Michael Laudrup, had spells with nine different clubs during his 1986-200 playing career, including Bayern Munich, Rangers, Ajax and Chelsea.
On the international front he won 88 caps and scored 21 goals.
Since hanging up his boots he has worked as a commentator for Indianapolis Colts jersey
Scandinavian television station TV3.
He explained that he had decided to go public on his illness to put to an end "all the rumours, half-truths and myths" about the state of his health.
Laudrup preferred not to elaborate about the nature of his cancer in an interview with Wednesday's BT, telling the newspaper: "I'm a very reserved person when it comes to my private life and I don't want to say any more other than what appeared in the statement."
However, he did reiterate that he was going to fight the disease, insisting that he was "very optimistic about being cured (as the cancer), which was diagnosed at an early stage, is a moderate form of lymphatic cancer".
"I will be devoting lots of Minnesota Vikings jersey
nergy in the coming weeks to dealing with this shock and to spending quality time with family and friends in order to move on after this diagnosis."

No amount of success can excuse excess

Steelers jersey

PARIS (AP)—Now that Wayne Rooney and Karim Benzema are scoring goals again for their countries, can we forget, even forgive, allegations that the English and French forwards paid prostitutes for sex?
The answer, unequivocally, is of course not. No amount of nfl jerseys
on-field success should excuse, gloss over or make us blind to such off-field excesses.
Rooney’s agent and the firm that handles his PR aren’t commenting on the lurid claims from the woman who calls herself “Juicy Jeni.” Quoted in the Sunday Mirror and News of the World tabloids, Jennifer Thompson says Rooney paid for “anything goes” sex sessions last year in a Manchester hotel.
If the goal-scorer and creator for England and Manchester United is embarrassed, bothered or even cares, he is doing a very good job of not showing it. He allowed himself only a quick smile and briefly clenched fists after scoring England’s opening goal in a 3-1 defeat of Switzerland on Tuesday night. Otherwise he showed little emotion. He was a rock during the playing of England’s national anthem, unblinking, his chin jutting out.
Benzema got France’s opening goal in a 2-0 win at Bosnia-Herzegovina. Again, he also has seemed unfazed by allegations from self-described “escort girl” Zahia Dehar that he paid her once for sex, when she was underage.
Benzema’s lawyer Sylvain Cormier denies that the Real Madrid player ever had relations with the woman.
“He has nothing to reproach himself for,” he says.
Here’s hoping that is true. Because this kind of dirt sticks. No amount of great goals will change that. Sports stars do survive scandals, but the admiration we had for them does not.
Look at Tiger Woods. Great golfer but, we now know, also a flawed man and a failure as a husband. He will most likely recover his game and win more trophies, but he will never recover all the esteem he once enjoyed. The sordid cascade of stories about his infidelities left an indelible stain than no amount of golf majors will erase.
The same will be true for Rooney if Thompson turns out to be telling the truth.
Like Woods, Rooney is entitled to privacy. It is a matter for them and them only if, as Thompson claims, he did cheat on his wife, Coleen, when she was pregnant last year with their first son, Kai.
It also is ridiculous to claim that the state of Rooney’s marriage is a matter of Dallas Cowboys jersey
public interest because he is a public figure. Don’t kid yourself: Tabloids publish such stories because they sell not because of any supposed crusade for the public good or morals.
Nor does it compute that Rooney is fair tabloid game and owes us all an explanation because he takes, via indirect routes, our money and our attention. Buying a Rooney shirt or one of the products that he endorses doesn’t get you an invite into his marital bed.
But when sports stars and other public figures are caught paying for sex, they perpetuate the noxious notion that women are cheap and disposable commodities. For that, they must be called to account and shamed.
Practically everything about the way the tabloids package and peddle such stories is degrading: the sex described as “romps,” the salacious and pathetic details, the manufactured quotes, the term “hooker,” the video of the woman writhing and wriggling in a bikini, presumably for money, in a photospread that runs with the story to rachet up its titillation factor.
Six years ago, when similar claims were splashed across the newspapers, the then-teenaged Rooney confessed to visiting prostitutes, expressed deep regret and trotted out the excuse that “it was the sort of mistake you make when you are young and stupid,” the BBC and others reported back then.
That explanation won’t work now.
He turns 25 next month so he is no longer that young.
But if he hasn’t learned from previous errors, then he is still stupid.
And no amount of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
goals could change that.
